I came across a post on Facebook the other day, and there were many confused comments and I had to shake my head just a little. Publix (a grocery store chain) was being praised for being "not commiting word crimes since 1957" and the picture above was posted. I looked at it and was like, yeah, ok 10 items or fewer. Why was this a big deal? Because I am a grammar nerd. So, here is a quick grammar lesson. The reason why Publix was being praised was because of their use of the word fewer. Most groceries stores you see say "10 items or less" The word LESS being the difference here. Here's the deal: fewer is used when we can count the number of things; less is used when something can't be counted.
There now, go and use the word fewer correctly.
